The Information about Central Kalimantan

   Central Kalimantan is one of the four provinces located in the Kalimantan Island, Indonesia.  Its coordinates is 2°13′S 113°55′E.  The total area of Central Kalimantan is 153,564 km2 (59,291.4 sq mi).  Central Kalimantan is the 3rd largest Indonesian province and has about 1.5 times the size of the island of Java.

   It is bordered by West and East Kalimantan provinces to the north, by the Java Sea to the south, by South and East Kalimantan provinces to the east, and by West Kalimantan province to west.  The northern area of Central Kalimantan is mountainous and difficult to reach. The central area is dense tropical forest. The southern area is swampy, with many rivers. The climate in Central Kalimantan is hot and humid.


   The Province of Central Kalimantan is divided into 13 districts or regencies and also one provincial capital.  The districts are South Barito, East Barito, North Barito, Gunung Mas, Kapuas, Katingan, West Kotawaringin, East Kotawaringin, Lamandau, Murung Raya, Pulang Pisau, Sukamara, and SeruyanIts provincial capital is Palangka Raya.  Central Kalimantan has a population of 2.2 million (2010 census).


   The languages used by the people in Central Kalimantan are Indonesian (official), Banjarese, Malay, Bugis, Dayak, Chinese Dialecs of Hakka and Teochew.  In Central Kalimantan, there are three big Dayak tribes: Ot Danum, Ngaju, and Ma’anyan Ot Siang.
 



The traditional weapon in Central Kalimantan is Mandau.  The traditional house in Central Kalimantan is Rumah Betang.  Central Kalimantan also has many traditional dances, the famous two are Tambun dan Bungai dance and Balean Dadas dance.




   Central Kalimantan is the lungs of the world, with so many trees and forests in it.  The Bornean tropical rain forest in it has so rich diversity of flora and fauna.  One famous fauna in Central Kalimantan is Orang Utan.  Orang Utan only lives in Sumatera and Kalimantan.  Orang Utan is endangered, it’s almost extinct, and that’s why we have to take care of it.


   In Central Kalimantan, there’s a National Park, named Tanjung Puting National Park.  Tanjung Puting National Park is a famous and well-known nature and wildlife reserve in Central Kalimantan with its lowland and swamp forests.  In Tanjung Puting National Park, you could see Orang Utans, Owa-owas, Bekantans, and other primates.  In Tanjung Puting National Park, you could also visit the Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, supported by the World Wide Fund (WWF).
